The Southern Illinois Salukis play Division I men's basketball in the intimate SIU Arena. With seating of just 8,339 the venue is one of the smallest in all of major college basketball. The 2014 Southern Illinois Salukis Men's Basketball Team

While it is still too early to tell if the team is a winner or a loser this year, one thing is for certain concerning the 2014 - 15 season of Southern Illinois basketball. The Salukis need to play better defense, rebound more effectively and score more points. Failing in these 3 important areas is not a recipe for success. The Salukis narrowly lost to St. Louis by 3 points, then beat a very average Tennessee State team by 17. After only 2 games, passing judgment on Southern Illinois may be a little premature. But when you are 154th or worse in rebounds, points, assists and field-goal percentage, something has to change if you expect a decent season. Junior guard Anthony Beane is averaging 23.0 points, 1.0 assists and 2.0 rebounds per game in the early going. And Sophomore forward Sean O'Brien is adding 10.5 rebounds, 15.0 points and 2.0 assists per game. But unless the team starts playing better defense and shooting the ball more efficiently, a March Madness appearance in 2015 is out of the question.

Southern Illinois Salukis National Invitation Tournament History

Since 1967 the Salukis have appeared in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) a total of 9 times. The NIT includes colleges which have not made it to the more prestigious March Madness tournament each year. Entering the 2014 season the University of Illinois men's basketball team is an even 8 wins and 8 losses in NIT play. The very first year that Illinois appeared in the tournament (1967) they won all 4 rounds and defeated Marquette for the Championship by a score of 71 - 56. The school most recently played in the NIT in 2008, losing in the 2nd round to Arizona State.

Southern Illinois Salukis NAIA Division I Tournament Performance

From 1945 through 1960 the Salukis made it to 5 NAIA Division I postseason tournaments. With an overall 9 - 4 record, the University of Illinois includes an NAIA National Championship in 1946. That year their average NAIA tournament victory came by nearly 10 points, and they narrowly defeated Indiana state by a score of 49 - 48 in the National Championship game.

Southern Illinois NCAA Division I and Division Tournament Results

From 1959 through 1966 the University of Southern Illinois was invited to the NCAA Division II tournament each year, a total of 7 times. With a respectable 17 - 9 record, the Salukis have nonetheless never won the NCAA Division II tournament. They did play in the Championship game in 1965 and 1966, losing both times by 3 points.
